Radiofrequency treatments are often applied to treat chronic pain. The most common therapeutic approach is lumbar or cervical rhizolysis. The aim of the rhizolysis is to perform a denervation of the painful nerve terminations of the facet joints to improve chronic low back pain or to treat a facet-joint syndrome. A conventional radiofrequency technique is usually applied to cause heat damage to the nerve terminations of the facet joints. Pulsed-radiofrequency treatments, due to their neuromodulatory effects, are applicable to other conditions, such as neuropathic pain or trigeminal neuralgia.
